[First of all] Confirmation of what we will look back on

Before explaining each group, let’s first confirm what we will be looking back on.

The contents to look back on are as follows

  • Standings up to the 5th round
  • Schedule for the final game
  • A few words of explanation

Let’s start with Group A.

Group A: Two strong and two weak, as expected

Standings up to the 5th round

Rank Club Win Points Win Draw Lose Goal Score
1st Manchester City 12 4 0 1 9
2nd Paris Saint-Germain 8 2 2 1 2
3rd Leipzig 4 1 1 3 0
4th Club Brugge 4 1 1 3 -11

Schedule for the final round

Schedule Combination
December 8 Leipzig vs Manchester City
Paris Saint-Germain vs Club Brugge

Commentary

As expected, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were the top two teams in the standings. These two teams have already won their respective matches, and the order of first and second place has been decided. The only thing to keep an eye on heading into the final matchup of the season is whether Leipzig or Club Brugge will make it to the Europa League.

Group B: Overwhelmingly strong Liverpool will confirm the top spot

Standings up to the 5th round

Rank Club Win Points Win Draw Lose Goal Score
1st Liverpool 15 5 0 0 10
2nd Porto 5 1 2 2 -5
3rd Atletico Madrid 4 1 1 3 -3
4th Milan 4 1 1 3 -2

Schedule for the final round

Schedule Combination
December 8 Porto vs Atletico Madrid
Milan vs Liverpool

Commentary

Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, and Milan are the biggest clubs in Europe, and in a deadly Group B matchup, Liverpool comes out on top with a dominant performance. The main focus of the final matchup will be the battle to advance to the knockout rounds. One step ahead of them is Porto, who are in second place. Fourth-placed Milan will also advance with a win over Liverpool, depending on the outcome of the other match.

Group C: Dortmund will be eliminated by surprise.

Standings up to the 5th round

Rank Club Win Points Win Draw Lose Goal Score
1st Ajax 15 5 0 0 13
2nd Sporting 9 3 0 2 4
3rd Dortmund 6 2 0 3 -6
4th Beşiktaş 0 0 0 5 -11

Schedule for the final round

Schedule Combination
December 8 Ajax vs Sporting
Dortmund vs Beşiktaş

Commentary

It’s been a bumpy ride for Dortmund, who were thought to have the best chance of advancing to the knockout round, but they were unexpectedly eliminated. If Sporting loses and Dortmund wins, they will be level on points, but Dortmund will have to go to the Europa League because it is impossible for Dortmund to beat Sporting based on wins, losses, and goals scored between the two teams.

Group D: The two biggest teams will make it through.

Standings up to the 5th round

Rank Club Win Points Win Draw Lose Goal Score
1st Real Madrid 12 4 0 1 9
2nd Inter 10 3 1 1 5
3rd Sheriff 6 2 0 3 -4
4th Shakhtar Donetsk 1 0 1 4 -10

Schedule for the final round

Schedule Combination
December 8 Shakhtar Donetsk vs Sheriff
Real Madrid vs Inter

Commentary

Real Madrid and Inter Milan, two of the favourites to make it through to the group stage, have both won their respective matches at the end of the first five rounds. The focus of the final matchup will be on which team will come out on top, as both teams will be looking to take advantage of the knockout rounds if they come out on top.

Group E: Can struggling Barcelona make it through?

Standings up to the 5th round

Rank Club Win Points Win Draw Lose Goal Score
1st Bayern Munich 15 5 0 0 16
2nd Barcelona 7 2 1 2 -4
3rd Benfica 5 1 2 2 -4
4th Dinamo Kiev 1 0 1 4 -8

Schedule for the final round

Schedule Combination
December 9 Bayern vs Barcelona
Benfica vs Dynamo Kiev

Commentary

Bayern and Barcelona were considered to be the top two teams in Group E, but so far, it’s been a tale of two halves. While Bayern is holding on to the top spot in the group with five wins from five games, Barcelona is struggling with two wins, one draw, and two losses. Although they are in second place in the group, they will have to wait until the final game to get through. Their opponents for the final game of the season will be first place Bayern. If Benfica wins, Barcelona will be eliminated from the group with a draw or less.

Group F: Manchester United, struggling domestically, will make it through.

Standings up to the 5th round

Rank Club Win Points Win Draw Lose Goal Score
1st Manchester United 10 3 1 1 3
2nd Villarreal 7 2 1 2 2
3rd Atalanta 6 1 3 1 0
4th Young Boys 4 1 1 3 -5

Schedule for the final round

Schedule Combination
December 9 Atalanta vs Villarreal
Manchester United vs Young Boys

Commentary

Manchester United has been struggling in the Premier League and finally decided to sack their manager, but they are still doing well in the Champions League. A draw or better in the final game of the season would put them on top of the table. Although the Young Boys have been eliminated, Villarreal and Atalanta are still in with a chance of making it through, so it’s a group that we’ll have to keep an eye on until the end of the season.

Group G: All teams still have a chance to finish on top

Standings up to the 5th round

Rank Club Win Points Win Draw Lose Goal Score
1st Lille 8 2 2 1 1
2nd Salzburg 7 2 1 2 1
3rd Sevilla 6 1 3 1 1
4th Wolfsburg 5 1 2 2 -3

Schedule for the final round

Schedule Combination
December 9 Wolfsburg vs Lille
Salzburg vs Sevilla

Commentary

In the absence of the so-called big clubs in Group G, the difference in points between the top and bottom of the table is just three, leaving all teams with a chance of making it through. Lille is the current leader of the group, but if they lose their last game and Sevilla wins, they will fall to third place. They will be eliminated from the group stage. Every team in Group G has a chance to make it through, so we’ll have to keep our eyes on them until the final day of the tournament.

Group H: Two strong clubs will make it through the group.

Standings up to the 5th round

Rank Club Win Points Win Draw Lose Goal Score
1st Chelsea 12 4 0 1 9
2nd Juventus 12 4 0 1 3
3rd Zenit 4 1 1 3 0
4th Malmo 1 0 1 4 -12

Schedule for the final round

Schedule Combination
December 9 Zenit vs Chelsea
Juventus vs Malmo

Commentary

Two strong clubs in Chelsea and Juventus, and two smaller clubs in Zenit and Malmo. When the groupings were first announced, it was thought that there would be two strong sides and two weak sides in Group H, and that prediction has come true. Chelsea and Juventus only lost to each other, but won all four of their remaining matches. Both Chelsea and Juventus have won all four of their remaining matches to advance past the group stage. The main thing to keep an eye on in the final game is which team will come out on top. If both teams win, Chelsea will be the first to go through on goal difference. Zenit and Malmo have no chance of making it through, but for the sake of their club pride, they need a win.
